Herb Score Demoted to Minors

May 7, 1962 - Herb Score, the one-time strikeout ace of the American League, was farmed to the minor leagues today by the Chicago White Sox. But he refused to admit it might mean the end of the baseball trail. “I feel I’ll be back soon,” said the 29-year-old southpaw when the White Sox told him he was being sent to Indianapolis. Score, who struck out 263 batters for the Cleveland Indians in 1956 but never has recovered his form since being hit in the face by a line drive by Gil McDougald of the Yankees on May 7, 1957 (pictured), will be making his second trip to the minors in less than a year. “It’s no great tragedy,” he said today. “I feel real good about my throwing this year, and my arm feels fine. Al Lopez asked me if I wanted to go out where I could get some work, and I said ‘sure.’”
