Sept. 7, 1964 - Angry officials of the Monterey, Calif., area issued “Don’t come back” warnings today to bands of black-jacketed motorcycle riders that invaded Monterey Bay towns during the weekend.
Perhaps 300 members — including both men and women — of an organization calling itself “Hell’s Angels” were escorted out of Monterey County after four men were arrested on rape charges and several robberies and fights were reported. It was the city’s third such experience with the cyclists during the last two years, and officials indicated they had had enough.
Police Chief Frank Marinello of Monterey declared today: “We will meet the Hell’s Angels head-on if they ever try coming into town again. I will not tolerate their presence.”
“These are not kids,” Mayor George M. Clemens protested. “They are old enough to know better. They’re a crummy looking lot, with their beards and unwashed appearance. We don’t want them back.”
Chief Marinello said the first group of cyclists, from Southern California, showed up at Monterey Saturday morning. Eventually, several streets were blocked off to contain the growing numbers.
The cyclists were assigned an area at Marina Beach, seven miles north of Monterey, “and they began to get rough about midnight,” Chief Marinello said. They were then ordered to leave.
