Hawks Blank Rangers

Feb. 13, 1965 - Goalie Glenn Hall registered his second shutout of the season and Stan Mikita climbed within one point of the NHL scoring lead today in pacing the Chicago Black Hawks to a 3-0 victory over the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden.

Mikita broke up a tight 1-0 battle midway in the final period, first assisting on Doug Mohns’ goal, then flipping in an angled shot 21 seconds later for his 20th goal.

The little center of the league-leading Hawks raised his point total to 66, just one behind teammate Bobby Hull, the league leader. Hull missed his fourth consecutive game because of torn ligaments in his right knee and only has 17 games remaining in which to score the 13 goals necessary to break the league record of 50.

Eric Nesterenko scored the other Chicago goal in the first period after taking a pass from Fred Stanfield.

The victory, before a sellout crowd of 15,925, raised the Black Hawks’ first-place lead to four points over the Canadiens, who lost in Boston. The Hawks will play Montreal tomorrow night, and Hull is expected to play.

Hall turned away 31 shots, several of the saves bordering on the spectacular. The Rangers kept constant pressure on the Chicago netminder throughout the second period and much of the third, but missed on several close-in shots and could not beat the Hawk goalie. Marcel Paille stopped 22 Chicago shots.
