Griffith KO’s Charnley in London

Dec. 1, 1964 - Emile Griffith, the world welterweight champion, scored a ninth‐round knockout over Dave Charnley, the British lightweight champion, in London tonight when the referee, Frank Wilson, stopped the fight to save the outclassed Briton from further punishment.

Griffith of New York floored the southpaw with a left hook which landed flush on his jaw.

Charnley rolled over and managed to regain his feet at the count of nine, but he was glassy-eyed. Wilson took one look at the Briton and waved Griffith away. The time was 1:56 of the ninth round.

Griffith controlled the fight at Wembley’s indoor stadium from the opening gong.

He floored Charnley twice in the third round. The first time the Briton was down for eight seconds from a left-right combination to the head. He was on the canvas again at the bell, when Griffith connected with a looping right.

The Associated Press scorecard had Griffith ahead, 7-1, in rounds. Charnley was given the fourth round.

It was Griffith’s second victorious appearance in the Wembley ring in little more than two months. On Sept. 22, he floored Welshman Brian Curvis three times in easily winning a 15-round title bout.

After the fight, promoter Jack Solomons said: “Griffith said he wants to fight in London again. I suggested Dick Tiger, and Griffith agreed. The fight will take place in London sometime next year. It all depends on what Tiger has to say.”
