Governor and Mrs. Rockefeller Welcome Baby Boy

May 30, 1964 - Governor Rockefeller’s sixth child — a 7-pound 10-ounce boy — was born at 4:15 today to his bride of a year, Mrs. Margaretta Fitler (Happy) Murphy Rockefeller. Mother and child were reported in excellent condition.

The beaming Governor, who had taken his 37-year-old wife to Lying-In Hospital at 530 E. 70th St. at 9:55 a.m., told newsmen: “They’re wonderful, they’re wonderful. They couldn’t be better.”

The elated father said the baby, delivered by Dr. Charles McLane, has been named Nelson Aldrich Jr.

“I’m thrilled it’s a boy, but I would have been happy with a girl too, as long as the baby is healthy,” Rockefeller told about 50 newspaper, radio, and TV reporters and a like number of autograph seekers and well-wishers who gathered outside the hospital.

“I’m very happy,” he said. “This is the most enjoyable press conference I’ve ever held.”

Asked what effect it would have on his campaign in California, where the Republican primary election will be held in three days, the Governor answered: “Right now, I’m not even thinking of politics.”

He then said he will fly back to California tonight.
