Giants Trade Kicker Don Chandler to Packers

Jan. 12, 1965 - The New York Giants today traded punter and place-kicking specialist Don Chandler (pictured) to the Green Bay Packers for a future draft choice — period. Paul Hornung does not enter into the New York picture.

Hornung, the Golden Boy who was a gilded flop this season after sitting out the 1963 season under suspension for gambling, has been rumored to be in disfavor with coach Vince Lombardi and possibly headed for New York.

Lombardi ranted and raved when informed of the rumor and emphatically denied it. He will still denying it today, but this time, he had help: Giant coach Allie Sherman.

“We did not talk to Green Bay about Hornung last year when there were stories that we were trading Del Shofner for him, and we have not talked to Green Bay about Hornung this year either,” Sherman said today.

Both Tom Moore and Elijah Pitts have performed well in Hornung’s halfback position, and now there is Chandler to take over Paul’s footwork. But it seems unlikely Lombardi will part with Hornung. A more likely development would be to relieve Hornung of kicking chores so he can concentrate on his halfback duties.

Hornung had double-duty troubles in addition to the problem of fighting himself back into shape last year. Paul missed extra points twice, both times in games lost by one point, and made only 12 of 38 field goals.

The departure of Chandler was not a complete surprise. He had a bad year — as did the entire team which fell from the top of the Eastern Division to the very bottom.

At his home in Tulsa today, Chandler, 30 years old, said: “I’ve had a great association with the Giants, but I’m not shook up over leaving.”
