July 13, 1964 - The Giants picked up two unearned runs off their buddy, Don Larsen, in the ninth inning today and beat the Colts, 5-3, in Houston. The victory kept San Francisco atop the National League, a game ahead of the Phillies.
Matty Alou opened the ninth with a pinch walk on a 3-2 pitch. Eddie Kasko picked up Jesus Alou’s grounder but missed second base for an error. Then Willie Mays bunted the Alous along. It was the first sacrifice bunt by Mays in years, and it was a beauty.
After Willie McCovey was walked intentionally, loading the bases, Orlando Cepeda brought Matty home with a short sacrifice fly to Carroll Hardy.
Jim Hart (pictured) followed with a single to center, driving Jesus across with the insurance run. He had homered earlier.
Hart has been playing sensationally since the All-Star break. The Giants have won five of their last six games, and he’s been a major reason. He’s hit safely in the last six games, driven in eight runs in those six, and knocked in at least one run in each of the six.
The rookie third baseman was hitting just .238 going into June, but he’s hit at a .340 pace since June 2. Jim is having more fun with National League pitching this year than he did in the Coast League last season. He has 12 homers now. Hart hit only 11 at Tacoma in 1963, before joining San Francisco and getting injured twice.
Billy O’Dell picked up the victory with four shutout innings of relief in which he allowed just one hit, a single. Bob Shaw wrapped it up in the ninth, notching his sixth save.
The Giants open a three-game series at Milwaukee tomorrow night, with Juan Marichal (12-4) on the mound. The Giants are 4-2 against the Braves this year.
