Giants Top Braves, 4-3, as Mays Hits 39th

Aug. 28, 1962 - Willie Mays hit his 39th home run today and then performed one of his extraordinary catches that preserved the Giants’ fifth straight triumph, a 4-3 victory over the Braves in San Francisco. Felipe Alou drove home the deciding run in the seventh by beating out a fielder’s choice after Del Crandall’s three-run homer had tied the score in Milwaukee’s half of the inning. Mays, who had hit a homer in the fourth, saved Juan Marichal’s 17th victory when he made a one-handed catch against the center-field fence of a long smash by Eddie Mathews, ending the eighth with a man on base. Marichal allowed six hits and struck out eight, including a pinch-hitter, Joe Torre, who fanned to end the game with two aboard.#MLB #baseball #OTD #1960s #giants #braves
