Giants Sneak Past Braves, 4-3

July 17, 1962 - The San Francisco Giants pushed across a ninth-inning run without a base hit and beat the Braves, 4-3, today in Milwaukee. The victory moved the Giants to within one game of first place as the league-leading Dodgers lost to the Reds. The Giants scored their decisive run on a walk, a sacrifice, and a two-base error by the Braves’ rookie second baseman, Amado Samuel, who entered the game as a pinch runner in the eighth. The Giants’ starter, Billy O’Dell, struck out 8 en route to his 11th victory against 8 losses. Orlando Cepeda hit his 20th homer in the first, and Felipe Alou lined his 16th homer leading off the seventh. The Braves scored twice in the fourth as Eddie Mathews walked, and Hank Aaron hit a towering drive into the bleachers in left center for this 23rd homer.
