Giants Beat Pirates on the Strength of Four Solo Shots

July 22, 1962 - The San Francisco Giants hit four solo home runs today and defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates, 5-4. Felipe Alou (left), whose 17th homer of the season started the barrage, drove in the winning run with a double in the fifth. Following Alou’s home run, Willie Mays smacked his 28th, Jim Davenport his 11th, and José Pagan his 4th. All four were hit off Harvey Haddix, the Pirate starter and loser. The Giants now have hit 124 home runs in 100 games this season. They trail the league-leading Dodgers by only two games.
