George Bush Wins GOP U.S. Senate Primary in Texas

June 7, 1964 - George Bush scored a landslide triumph last night over Jack Cox in the Republican U.S. Senate primary in Texas.

The victory sent Bush into the general election in November against Senator Ralph Yarborough, a Democrat.

The runoff became necessary when neither candidate received a majority in the May 2 primary. Bush rolled up a sizable margin but did not achieve a majority.

Bush, 39, is a Houston oil industry executive who supports Senator Barry Goldwater for President. He is a son of former Senator Prescott Bush of Connecticut.
