George Best Starts Chelsea Rout of Manchester United

Mar. 14, 1965 - Center forward David Herd’s two goals sparked Manchester United to a 4-0 upset Saturday over English league leader Chelsea.

Left-winger George Best (pictured) started the rout with a goal in the fourth minute. Herd’s pair followed in the 25th and 48th minutes, and the incomparable Denis Law got the closer in the 77th minute.

The Manchester victory kept things alive at the top of the English league standings. Chelsea now leads with 48 points from 33 matches. Leeds United, held to a 2-2 tie at Fulham, is second with 46 points from 32 matches, and Manchester United has 45 points, also from 32 matches.
