Aug. 6, 1964 - A former New York Met first baseman, Jim Harkness, today called his former manager, Casey Stengel, an uninspiring manager whom the game has bypassed.
He accused Stengel of going to sleep on the bench during some Mets games.
Harkness, who was sold last month to the San Diego Padres of the Pacific Coast League, said:
“Casey has been a great man for baseball as far as publicity is concerned, but the game has passed him by. Some players he likes and some he doesn’t like,” Harkness continued during an interview prior to leaving for San Diego. “The players feel it, and it isn’t too inspiring when the manager goes to sleep on the bench during a game.”
