Flatt and Scruggs Bring Bluegrass Sound to New York

Dec. 3, 1961 - Bluegrass artists Flatt and Scruggs and the Foggy Mountain Boys played a packed concert Saturday at New York’s Ethical Culture Society Auditorium along with Jack Elliott, singer and guitarist. The group’s featured member, Earl Scruggs, is a modest virtuoso whose banjo innovations have made his name synonymous with a performing style. A graduate of the Bill Monroe band, Mr. Scruggs during the last 15 years has been instrumental — in both senses — in elevating the banjo from a backing vehicle to a leading melody voice.
