Family of Joe Frazier Receives Donations

Dec. 25, 1964 - The family of Olympic heavyweight boxing champion Joe Frazier, who has been unable to work because of a broken thumb, enjoyed “the merriest Christmas ever” today after receiving help from Philadelphia’s mayor and other citizens.

Frazier, his wife Florence, and their three children — Marvis, 4; Jacqueline, 3; and Weatta, 14 months — faced a bleak Christmas as the 21-year-old boxer has been unable to work at his job in a slaughterhouse because of the broken thumb he suffered at the Olympics in Tokyo. The only money he had received since the Olympics was a $100 Christmas gift from his employer two weeks ago.

But when Frazier’s plight became known, help started pouring in. Mayor James Tate telephoned to offer Frazier a job with the city’s Department of Recreation, and other job offers followed.

Gifts also were sent, including food, baskets of fruit, toys, and cash contributions totaling more than $800.

Mrs. Frazier called it “the merriest Christmas that there ever has been.”

“We got everything we possible could’ve wanted or dreamed of,” she added.
