Ethel Kennedy Gives Birth to Boy, “Doing Fine”

Jan. 11, 1965 - Mrs. Ethel Kennedy, who had skated on the Rockefeller Center ice rink two weeks ago, gave birth to an 8-pound boy this morning at New York’s Roosevelt Hospital. A spokesman for the hospital said the 36-year-old Mrs. Kennedy, wife of Senator Robert F. Kennedy, and the boy were “doing fine.” (Pictured below, Sen. Kennedy walks from Roosevelt Hospital after visiting his wife.)

The baby, the sixth boy and the ninth child of Senator and Mrs. Kennedy, was delivered by Caesarian section at 4:11 a.m. by Dr. Ralph Gause, chief of the hospital’s department of obstetrics and gynecology. Mrs. Kennedy’s eighth child, Christopher, born on July 4, 1963, was also delivered by Caesarian section.

Senator Kennedy accompanied his wife to the hospital last evening then went to his apartment at the Carlyle Hotel. When asked today about a name for the new baby, he replied: “Ethel hasn’t decided yet.”
