Eisenhower Turns 71, Celebrates in Gettysburg

Oct. 14, 1961 - Former President Eisenhower celebrated his 71st birthday today by playing bridge with house guests at his farm in Gettysburg, Pa. General Eisenhower, looking trim and fit, planned a quiet day after attending a special “theatre” performance staged by his three granddaughters and directed by his grandson last night. “I look forward to every birthday with glee,” he said, noting that many persons in 1958 thought he did not have long to live. Mrs. Eisenhower gave her husband a satchel for his golf equipment as a present. She said it was identical to a piece of luggage she gave him 25 years ago and that it was what he wanted.
