Dressen Has Heart Attack

Mar. 9, 1965 - Manager Charlie Dressen of the Detroit Tigers has suffered a minor heart attack and will be hospitalized for about three weeks.

St. John’s Hospital in Santa Monica, Calif., said today that the 66-year-old manager should be able to rejoin the club in an advisory capacity in four to six weeks and should be completely recovered in three months.

Dressen suffered a coronary occlusion, or blockage of a heart artery.

He entered the hospital yesterday after he had felt chest pains at the Tigers’ spring training camp at Lakeland, Fla. He came to California by plane. His home is in Los Angeles.

General manager Jim Campbell said: “Charlie woke up Sunday night with pains in his chest and arms. The first thing in the morning, he packed up and got coach Stubby Overmire to drive him to the Tampa airport. Stubby said he coughed a lot on the way to Tampa.”The club placed coach Bob Swift in temporary charge. “I’ll keep doing things Charlie’s way,” Swift said today.

The Tigers open their exhibition season Saturday against the Minnesota Twins at Orlando, Fla.
