Dr. Soblen Takes Overdose of Barbiturates, Condition “Serious”

Sept. 6, 1962 - Dr. Robert Soblen (pictured left last year) swallowed an overdose of barbiturates today and was taken unconscious to a London hospital shortly before he was to have been deported to the U.S. His condition is said to be serious. Prison officials were seeking to determine how the Lithuanian-born psychiatrist had obtained the drug and taken it without being seen by his guards. It was the second time the 61-year-old convicted spy had thwarted an attempt to return him to the U.S., where he faces life imprisonment for wartime espionage on behalf of the Soviet Union. On July 1, Soblen stabbed himself with a steak knife and was taken off the airliner that was carrying him from Israel to New York.
