Jan. 3, 1965 - Doris Day was voted the top money-making star of 1964 in the annual poll of motion picture theater owners conducted by the trade publication, the Motion Picture Herald. Day also led the field in this canvass in 1960, 1962, and 1963.
A newcomer to the list was Richard Burton, highly successful in “Becket” and “Night of the Iguana.” He displaced a frequent favorite of the past, Elizabeth Taylor, who finished 11th on the strength of her holdover picture from 1963, “Cleopatra.” Taylor is Burton’s wife.
The second to ninth place, in order, went to Jack Lemmon, Rock Hudson, John Wayne, Cary Grant, Elvis Presley, Shirley MacLaine, Ann-Margret, and Paul Newman.
