Dodgers Pound Woeful Mets, 16-5

Aug. 26, 1962 - At the Polo Grounds today, the Mets enacted what appeared to be a taped re-run of their all-summer series, “This Is Our Life.” In losing to the Dodgers, 16-5, New York made 5 errors that led to 12 unearned runs. While pounding 4 Met pitchers for 13 hits, including homers by Willie Davis and Tim Harkness, the Dodgers maintained their two-and-a-half game lead over the Giants. Maury Wills stole 3 bases and brought his season total to 72. The three thefts (two of second and one of third) made him the second-best base-stealer in modern National League history. Wills now is only 8 shy of the record set by Bob Bescher of Cincinnati in 1911. Among modern players, Ty Cobb was the only one to steal more bases than Bescher. The Georgia Peach stole 96 for Detroit in 1915.#MLB #baseball #OTD #1960s #mets #dodgers
