May 30, 1962 - Dennis Weaver (pictured left with James Arness), whose role of Chester Goode on “Gunsmoke” had been in doubt, will appear on a minimum of 15 shows during the 1962-63 season. This was disclosed today by Hubbell Robinson, senior vice president of programs for CBS-TV. He said “Gunsmoke,” which stars James Arness as Marshal Matt Dillon, also would introduce a new deputy to the marshal. The new role will be played by 26-year-old Burt Reynolds.
