Apr. 17, 1962 - David Brinkley of NBC established something of a minor television precedent last night by publicly welcoming Walter Cronkite (pictured) of CBS to the “thin and battered ranks” of newscasters who had to work five nights a week. Mr. Cronkite began a new assignment yesterday as head of the CBS evening news program. He succeeds Douglas Edwards. In the New York area, Mr. Brinkley’s friendly salutation to a rival was heard 15 minutes before Mr. Cronkite’s debut in the Monday-through-Friday routine. In other parts of the East, the two 15-minute programs are on the air simultaneously at 6:45 p.m.
