Aug. 16, 1961 - The Dallas police ordered bookstores in that city today to quit selling the controversial book "Tropic of Cancer" by Henry Miller or face charges under the state's new anti-obscenity law. Special Service Bureau detectives, with Police Chief Jesse E. Curry's approval, visited major downtown bookstores to issue the warning. Detective Lieut. Frank Cornwall said today that in his opinion the book was obscene. Chief Curry also condemned the book. "It is, in my opinion, a filthy thing," he said.
