Cousy Shines as Celtics Top Pistons in Detroit

Mar. 7, 1963 - The "magic number" became 4 and the "magic name" was Bob Cousy as the Boston Celtics defeated the Pistons, 115-104, tonight in Detroit. The magic figure means the Celtics need only a combination of four Boston wins and Los Angeles Laker defeats to clinch first place in the NBA. The Cousy name was magic as the Celtics star made his farewell appearance in Detroit unless the Pistons and Celtics should meet in the championship final. Owner Fred Zollner of the Pistons combined with the Holy Cross Club of Michigan in establishing a permanent "Bob Cousy Scholarship." This sets up a fund for an outstanding scholar-athlete of Michigan to go to Holy Cross, Cousy's alma mater. The presentation was made between the halves, and Cousy thanked everyone for the gift. During the game, Cousy came through with some key plays. His point total matched his uniform number of 14.
