Oct. 21, 1964 - The Beatles couldn’t make it to Glamis Castle for the Countess of Strathmore’s tea party last night, so they invited her to theirs.
She jumped into her chauffeured Rolls Royce and went right over to Caird Hall in Dundee, Scotland, where she managed to get through a struggling mass of 6,000 screaming Beatle fans and backstage to meet John, Paul, George, and Ringo.
The Countess (pictured bottom) is a cousin to Queen Elizabeth by marriage.
She had tea with the Beatles before the show.
When she decided to stay to see the show, a message was phoned to the staff at Glamis Castle saying the Countess would not be home for dinner.
After the show, the Countess said, “I love the Beatles. I think they are fab. That’s the word, isn’t it? But I could not hear one word of their songs.
“The audience was appalling and completely bad-mannered to make so much noise. Most of the time, I had my fingers over my ears to keep out that awful noise.”
Scores of girls were led from the hall sobbing or in a state of collapse.
In Glasgow, police had a particularly heavy problem on their hands — an international football match and the Beatles all at the same time.
Glasgow police have handled both separately before but never at the same time.
