Connally Announces Reelection Bid

Jan. 9, 1964 - Governor John Connally of Texas, wounded by the assassin who killed President Kennedy Nov. 22, announced today that he would run for Governor again. Mr. Connally, who was Mr. Kennedy’s first Secretary of the Navy, resigned that post in 1961 to run for Governor. Although he had been expected to run, the timing of the announcement was unexpected. A newsman asked him when he intended to announce. “What’s wrong with right now?” Mr. Connally responded. The 46-year-old Governor is a close political and personal friend of President Johnson. Mr. Connally still carries his right arm in a cast as a result of his wounds from the shooting. He said he had regained the 10 pounds he lost after he was shot.
