Aug. 10, 1964 - A Communist newspaper published today a picture of the United States pilot it said was shot down last week during the United States raid on North Vietnam’s torpedo boat bases.
The newspaper, Wen Wei Pao, identified the pilot as Lieut. (jg.) Everett Alvarez Jr. of San Jose, Calif. It carried the picture on a United States Navy identification card bearing Alvarez’s signature together with a photograph of a wrecked plane that the newspaper said was piloted by Alvarez.
Officials of North Vietnam had said earlier that Lieutenant Alvarez was captured, but publication of the picture of his identification card was the first specific evidence supporting the statement. The article said the plane had been downed near Hanoi.
