Communist Radio Broadcasts Alleged Statement from U.S. Prisoner

Aug. 20, 1964 - A United States pilot who was taken prisoner during the retaliatory air strikes on North Vietnamese bases on Aug. 5 was quoted by the Hanoi radio today as having said he had been well treated and “adequately clothed and sheltered.”

The pilot is Lieut. (j.g.) Everett Alvarez Jr. (left), of San Jose, Calif., whose plane was downed by ground fire. The Communist radio, in a broadcast monitored in Tokyo, said Lieut. Alvarez made the statement in a letter to his wife, Tangee.

The broadcast did not say when the letter was written and whether it had been delivered to Mrs. Alvarez.

“Up to now I have been well treated,” the pilot was quoted as having said. “I am adequately clothed and sheltered. The people that believe I am dead should be aware that I am not.”
