Oct. 18, 1964 - Quarterback John Hadl, starting his first game this year, passed for two touchdowns and ran for another today to lead the Chargers to a 42-14 win over the Denver Broncos in San Diego and sole possession of first place in the Western Division of the American Football League. 23,332 fans cheered the victory. Hadl broke a 7-7 tie with a four-yard scoring pass to Lance Alworth and later combined with Dave Kocourek on a 46-yard scoring pass and ran 18 yards on a quarterback draw for a third score. He hit on 18 of 28 passes for 216 yards and ran twice for 23 yards.
The Chargers looked like the defending champions for the first time this year, controlling the contest with sustained of marches of 70, 70, 47, 80, 36, and 67 yards, respectively.
