Chargers Hand Oilers their First Shutout Loss

Dec. 1, 1963 - Keith Lincoln and Paul Lowe exploited a weak Houston Oiler rushing defense to pace the San Diego Chargers to a 27-0 American Football League victory today in a game at Balboa Stadium between the division leaders. (Picured below, Ernie Ladd bears down on Houston quarterback George Blanda.) The win gave the Chargers a two-game lead in the Western Division. Houston’s loss, its first shutout since Dec. 4, 1960 — when the Oilers were defeated, 24-0, by the Dallas Texans — dropped Houston into a first-place tie with the Boston Patriots in the Eastern Division. Both clubs lead the New York Jets by a half game, with the Oilers and Patriots set to face off next week. Lincoln, who gained 102 yards, crashed through the middle on a 15-yard draw play to give San Diego a 7-0 lead in the first quarter. San Diego built that lead to 20-0 at the half on 42 and 20-yard field goals by George Blair and a two-yard scoring slant by Paul Lowe. Lowe, who picked up 79 yards, was the workhorse of San Diego’s offense with 21 carries. The Chargers put the contest out of reach, 27-0, in the final quarter with a 22-yard pass from Tobin Rote to Lance Alworth. The march covered 80 yards in 11 plays.
