Celtics Win 16th Straight

Jan. 22, 1965 - The power-packed Boston Celtics, leaning on Willie Naulls until they jelled, ran their victory streak to 16 straight — one shy of the NBA record — by defeating the San Francisco Warriors, 104-94, last night at the Boston Garden.

The Warriors equaled another mark with their 15th consecutive setback, matching a string fashioned by the Denver Nuggets in 1949.

Dave Gambee and Lucious Jackson, collecting 10 points in a 12-point overtime spree, led the Philadelphia 76ers to a 109-103 triumph over the Detroit Pistons in the first game of the doubleheader.

Naulls led the Celtics with 24 points, 17 of them before intermission, when the rest of the club was cold.

Trailing 46-45 at halftime, the Celtics slowly moved in front, led 73-63 by the end of the third quarter, and boosted the edge to 19 points midway through the final period.

Sam Jones (pictured #24) got 20 points for the winners. Bill Russell retired to the bench with more than six minutes to play, boasting 30 rebounds and 10 points.

The NBA record of 17 straight victories was set by present Celtics coach Red Auerbach’s 1946 Washington Capitols team and tied by his Celtics in 1959.
Wilt Chamberlain, playing his second game with his new Philadelphia mates, scored 21 points and grabbed 32 rebounds.
