Celtics Destroy 76ers at Boston Garden

Jan. 28, 1965 - Sam Jones and Tom Sanders on offense and Bill Russell on defense sparked the Celtics to a 115-98 triumph over the Philadelphia 76ers last night before 9,290 at the Boston Garden. The 76ers, minus the services of back-court speedster Larry Costello, were in the pursuit role virtually all night after the Celts bolted to a 20-7 lead in the first six minutes.

The 76ers caught up in the third quarter at 61-61 and later at 65-65, but a bucket by Tom Heinsohn broke the second tie and put Boston ahead for keeps.

The absence of Costello, who suffered a bruised hip Thursday night in New York, put extra pressure on the 76ers’ back-court personnel. Costello is also likely to be absent when the teams meet in Philadelphia tomorrow night, according to 76ers’ trainer Bill Bates.

Wilt Chamberlain had 28 points for the night after a 16-point first half. Wilt lost the rebound duel to Russell, who played longer. The total board grabs were 28 for Russell, 19 for Chamberlain.

Sam Jones was the high scorer with 29 points. Hal Greer had 24 and Luke Jackson 20 for the 76ers.

A crowd of more than 10,000 is expected to jam Convention Hall for tomorrow night’s matchup in the featured second game of a doubleheader.

“It might reach 11,000,” Mike Iannarella, 76ers’ ticket manager, said today. “We’ve already sold over 8,000.”

Additional bleacher seats will push the Hall’s capacity, normally 9,200, to 10,000. The New York Knicks and the Detroit Pistons meet in the 7:15 p.m. opener.
