Feb. 20, 1965 - John Havlicek led the Boston Celtics on a fourth-quarter comeback against a surprising San Francisco club tonight for a 114-108 victory.
A crowd of 4,304 in Civic Auditorium saw the Warriors, cellar dwellers of the Western division, grab a four-point lead over the Eastern division leaders with two minutes gone in the fourth period.
But the Warriors could not hold the lead as Havlicek scored 10 points in that final quarter and 27 for the night to pace the visitors’ attack.
Guy Rodgers was the high man for the Warriors with 28. Nate Thurmond scored 19 in the first half for the Warriors, and then Boston’s Bill Russell stopped him without a point for the rest of the game. Russell and Thurmond each finished with 27 rebounds.
The Warriors simply don’t have the depth Boston can produce. Gary Phillips was great for a spurt in the second period, when the Warriors fought back from a 15-point deficit, and Cotton Nash came through with three timely buckets.
But the San Francisco bench is no match for a player like Havlicek.
The Celtics have now beaten San Francisco in seven out of eight games this season.
