Sept. 15, 1964 - Mrs. Jacqueline Kennedy entered her daughter Caroline in school today and then participated briefly in the hurly-burly of politics.
Mrs. Kennedy and her son, John Jr., were pushed about by a cheering crowd of about 400 persons when they visited the headquarters of Robert F. Kennedy (pictured), the Democratic-Liberal candidate for the U.S. Senate.
Later, when asked what she would be doing during the campaign, she replied: “I’ll do whatever they ask me.”
She and her son arrived at the headquarters at 9 East 42nd Street about noon and were there less than 10 minutes. They shook hands and exchanged greetings with volunteer workers.
While she was inside the building, the appearance of photographers in the street drew a crowd.
As soon as Mrs. Kennedy and her son stepped out on the sidewalk, the crowd closed in. Campaign workers rushed to her side, trying to hold off the crowd and clear a path to her car. Mrs. Kennedy held the boy by the hand.
A few times, it seemed that she might be thrown off balance. However, she did not fall and managed to get to her car without injury to herself or her son. Traffic was delayed as men and women streamed across the street.
Earlier, Mrs. Kennedy had taken Caroline, who is 6 years old, to the Convent of the Sacred Heart School at 1 East 91st Street for the first time. Accompanying them were Mrs. Peter Lawford, Mrs. Kennedy’s sister-in-law, and her daughter, Sydney, who was also making her first trip to school.
Some nuns and girls watched their arrival from a second-floor window. Apart from this show of interest and curiosity about the new students, there was every indication that the school would treat them like all the rest.
