Canadiens Defeat Black Hawks in Chicago

Jan. 17, 1965 - Gump Worsley’s tremendous netminding, backed by some fine defensive play and opportunity goals, gave the Montreal Canadiens an important 4-2 victory over the Black Hawks tonight in a whirlwind game before 15,873 at Chicago Stadium. (Pictured below, Montreal’s Ted Harris [10] engages Bobby Hull in high-sticking duel while goalie Worsley sinks to the ice.)

The Gumper, who replaced Charlie Hodge for Saturday’s 3-2 Montreal Forum win over Boston, was never better in this triumph that put the Habs two points ahead of the Hawks with two games in hand.

From the opening second of play when he made a great pad save on Bobby Hull, Worsley was fantastic, and his clutch stops gave the Canadiens the lift they needed to come from behind with three third period goals.

Worsley handled 34 shots, with 11 from the hot stick of Hull, the Hawks’ 36-goal scorer.

“About six of Hull’s shots were great scoring chances,” said Montreal coach Toe Blake. “Hull is always dangerous. He always seems to be in position to shoot. Just how he gets that puck past three or four guys in front of him I can’t understand.”

Claude Provost connected for his 16th and 17th tallies of the season, one into an empty net with 10 seconds to play. Claude Larose got the 2-2 equalizer, his 13th, after firing Saturday’s winner against Boston, and Leon Rochefort scored the winning goal.

The turning point of the game came at the start of the third period. The Canadiens were two men short for 1:33 following minors to Henri Richard and Jean-Guy Talbot. But Jim Roberts, Jacques Laperriere, and Terry Harper hustled the Hawks into making too many passes, and Worsley made two great stops on Hull.

John Ferguson drew four of the Habs’ minors in trying to keep the Hawks honest. He traded head gashes with Stan Mikita.
