Feb. 4, 1965 - There was a trace of moisture at the edge of Camille Henry’s eyes, and his voice was ragged with emotion. “I’m sad,” he said. “I feel terrible. I’m choked up inside, and I’ve been walking around in a daze all day. I can’t hide it. I’m a Ranger.”
Henry was shocked this morning when he was called into New York Ranger general manager Emile Francis’s office and informed that he had been traded to the Chicago Black Hawks as part of a six-player deal.
“I just sat there stunned,” Camille said. “Emile said, ‘Well, you didn’t fall off your chair yet.’ But he doesn’t know how close I was.”
For 12 years, Henry has been part of the Ranger organization, and suddenly he was gone. “I guess it’s part of life as an athlete,” Henry said. “The part I don’t like.”
The Rangers received Doug Robinson, John Brenneman, and Wayne Hillman in exchange for Henry, Don Johns, and Bill Taylor. Johns and Taylor will be going to Buffalo of the AHL. The three Hawks will come directly to the Rangers.
“We needed bigger players,” Francis said. “We hated to trade Cammy, but we had to give up something to get something. These new players will give us muscle.”
Henry gave the Rangers heart, but he never gave them muscle. There were times late last season when Henry weighed 138 pounds after a game. He was up to 142 this season, but his value to the Rangers was in his deft stickhandling and scoring ability. Henry has 21 goals this season and 247 in his NHL career.
“I’ve been spending all day trying to figure out how I’ll fit in with Chicago,” Henry said. “New York has been my second home. I hate to leave the people I know and the friends I have made. Now, I have to go to a new city and start all over again.”Henry will return to New York a week from Saturday when the Black Hawks play the Rangers. “I have no idea what it’s going to be like playing against New York,” he said. “I never thought I would have to worry about it.”
“I guess it doesn’t pay to be captain,” Henry added, referring to the fact that both he and Andy Bathgate were team captains before being traded away.
