California Man Searches for Brother in Vietnamese Jungles

Jan. 29, 1965 - Since November, a young Californian seafarer has been searching the Vietnamese jungles for his brother, a United States Army pilot lost in a crash.

Don Dawson, the 25-year-old Californian, looks like a twin of his brother, Lieut. Dan Dawson (pictured), 27. He says he will go on looking as long as he is able, even if he too risks disappearing in the jungle.

Lieut. Dawson was flying a reconnaissance mission over Viet Cong territory on Nov. 6 when his plane crashed.

Don Dawson, who holds a skipper’s license for small-tonnage ships, said of his wife, Jean, in Costa Mesa, Calif., “I told her I would be away just for a few months, and afterward we would have our whole life together. I left her with $20 and told her to find a job.” There are four young children, and Mrs. Dawson is working as a waitress.

Once in Vietnam, Don Dawson offered a reward of 100,000 piasters (about $1,300) for his brother and lesser amounts for information about him or his body. He hitchhiked aboard Army spotter planes, searching the jungles where his brother is believed to have gone down. Pilots scattered his leaflets offering the reward.
