Calif. State Senator Calls for Investigation into Hell’s Angels Cycle Club

Sept. 8, 1964 - California State Senator Fred S. Farr, shocked by the rape-and-rob weekend raid by the Hell’s Angels, today called for an immediate investigation of the motorcycle-riding mob by the California Attorney General’s office.

Some 250 of the black-jacketed Angels were run out of Monterey County Sunday by a posse of lawmen.

Four Angels were jailed as suspects in the gang rape of two teenage girls early Sunday morning on a remote beach 10 miles north of Monterey, where the motorcyclists had set up camp. One girl, 14, was assaulted 20 times. The other, 15, was assaulted eight times.

Farr, a Democrat from Carmel, wired Attorney General Thomas Lynch:

“As chief law enforcement officer of California, and in order to protect other California communities, I ask you to make a thorough investigation of the activities of the Hell’s Angels motorcycle group.

“Members of this organization are believed to have participated in the mass rape of two local girls. It was necessary for all law enforcement agencies on the Monterey Peninsula to act in concert to escort this group from our area. Would appreciate immediate reply.”

Lynch was not available for comment.

The Angels are also suspected of strong-arm robberies of two Monterey men Saturday night in a downtown tavern where the cyclists rendezvoused.
