Burgess Meredith Cast on “Mr. Novak”

Dec. 8, 1964 - Burgess Meredith has been named the new principal of Jefferson High School on “Mr. Novak.” MGM Television, producer of the series, said today that he would succeed Dean Jagger (left), who has withdrawn from the role.

Meredith probably will appear on the show for the first time early in February. He will be introduced in a two-part story called “Faculty Follies,” in which he plays a veteran teacher who returns to the high school to assist the faculty in staging a show.

Meredith will be co-starred with James Franciscus (right), who portrays a teacher. “Mr. Novak,” now in its second season, is televised on Tuesdays at 7:30 p.m.

Last week, MGM announced that Jagger had asked to be released from the show because of the recurrence of an ulcer. It said the actor’s physician had ordered him to take a complete rest. There are seven more episodes of “Mr. Novak” to be televised in which Jagger appears.
