Browns and Colts Collect Record Shares

Jan. 25, 1965 - The Cleveland Browns and the Baltimore Colts today collected the largest player shares in the 32-year history of the NFL championship game.

The Browns received $8,053 a man as the winning share of the Dec. 27 game, and the Colts each collected $5,571. The Browns voted 50 full shares. The Colts 48 shares.

The winning and losing shares were almost the same as those for the 1964 baseball World Series. The victorious St. Louis Cardinals received $8,422 a man and the losing New York Yankees $5,309.

Pete Rozelle, the NFL commissioner, said the 1964 title game was the first football game in history to gross more than $2 million. The gross receipts, including $1.8 million for network television, totaled $2,484,384.
