British Group The Zombies Refused Visas

Dec. 16, 1964 - America has finally put a stop to the invasion of British beat groups.

The Zombies (pictured) — who topped the American charts last week with their first single, “She’s Not There” — have been refused H-1 visas, reserved for alien artists of “distinguished merit and ability.” Their chagrin is not lessened by the fact that the Beatles, the Mersey Beats, the Searchers, and the Animals made the grade.

They heard the shocking news by cable from New York today — with everything ready for their departure next Tuesday to start a five-week tour.

Tito Burnts, their agent-manager, said: “We are absolutely stunned. We have 52 shows lined up and television engagements.
“We have instructed our New York agents to lodge an appeal against the immigration authority’s decision. We can only hope they will see sense and reverse it.”

This afternoon, the Associated Booking Corporation has filed the appeal and is now seeking a clearance order under the H-2 provision of the Immigration and Nationality Act. This permits aliens to enter the U.S. on a temporary basis if persons capable of performing similar services are not available.
