Mar. 31, 1965 - Billy Walker (right), considered the golden boy of British boxing, was outpointed by Brian London, the former British heavyweight champion, in 10 rounds in Wembley, England, last night.
It was a decisive triumph for London’s experience and strength against the youth and durability of Walker.
In the opening round, London started with a hard right to the jaw but was caught by three stinging rights in return. The former champion fought his way off the ropes and jabbed his way out of trouble, but he was caught again with a swinging right to the jaw. London did not seem seriously hurt, but he looked slow.
Walker, however, was gradually worn down over the second half of the fight. Toward the end, Walker was taking tremendous punishment and standing up to it gamely, but he was scarcely scoring at all. He was tottering about on rubbery legs and almost stumbled over once or twice.
In the final round, London again took the fight to his opponent. Walker, game to the end, hung on grimly to last the distance — but the result was inevitable.
There were no knockdowns.
