July 21, 1962 - Three-hit pitching by Warren Spahn and two homers by Joe Adcock, good for five runs, gave the Milwaukee Braves an 8-1 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies today. Spahn’s 318th victory moved him into ninth place on the all-time list, one ahead of Mickey Welch (1859-1941) of the Troy Trojans and New York Gothams/Giants. Spahn’s 5 strikeouts put him within 2 of Lefty Grove’s record of 2,717. Adcock belted a three-run homer in the first and a two-run homer in the third, both off the starter, Jack Hamilton.
