Feb. 18, 1965 - A judge today awarded Marlon Brando custody of his 6-year-old son by Anna Kashfi but said the boy must live with Brando’s older sister.
Thus ended a five-day trial of a suite, highlighted by unusually frank testimony, in which the actor asked custody on grounds that Anna, his first wife, was an unfit mother.
The sister, Mrs. Frances Loving, lives far from the Hollywood homes of both parents — in Mundelein, Ill.
Judge Laurence Rittenbrand commented:“Miss Kashfi’s reliance on drugs and alcohol contributed to her uncontrollable temper. The evidence here and in the probation report does not label Miss Kashfi as an unfit mother but does make her emotionally unstable. With her own problems, I feel that she will have enough trouble taking care of herself, let alone taking care of her son.”
The judge put Miss Kashfi on probation for six months for psychiatric examination. When he announced his custody decision, Miss Kashfi jumped up from her seat and banged swinging doors as she ran out of the courtroom.
Outside, she told a newsman:“This baby is my whole life. I bore him. Where in the hell was Marlon Brando when the child was being brought up? I am not through fighting. I will subpoena the judge and the whole damn court.”
She then wandered aimlessly and cursing around the parking lot behind the building.
