Brando Attends Thai Premiere of “The Ugly American”

Mar. 26, 1963 - The King and Queen of Thailand and Marlon Brando (right with director George Englund) attended the world premiere in Bangkok last night of the movie, “The Ugly American.” The picture was filmed in Thailand with Mr. Brando in a leading role. Mr. Brando, who appeared on stage before the movie version of the best-selling novel was shown, told the audience: “Every Thai is an ambassador. Since I have been here, I have never seen a face of despair. If every Thai could be sent out as a member of the Peace Corps, as an ambassador of love and goodwill, it would ease tensions.” In the film, Harrison MacWhite (Brando) becomes the ambassador of Sarkan, a fictional southeast Asian country where civil war is brewing.
