Aug. 4, 1964 - After only 38 days of marriage, Ethel Merman and Ernest Borgnine have parted company, their friends reported today.
They said the famed musical comedy star walked out of Borgnine’s Beverly Hills home after a fight Monday night.
She was registered at a Beverly Hills hotel today, while Borgnine was at work on his television series, “McHale’s Navy,” at Universal Studios.
Neither would comment on the state of their brief romance.
Miss Merman, 55, and Borgnine, 47, were married June 27 at a ceremony performed by Municipal Judge Mario Clinco in the garden of the Beverly Hills house.
Only a few relatives were present, but afterward the newlyweds hosted a reception for 500 guests at Chasen’s.
They honeymooned for three weeks in Japan, Hong Kong, and Honolulu, returning a short time ago so Borgnine could resume work on the TV show.
It was the fourth marriage for Miss Merman, whose many hits included “Annie Get Your Gun” and “Gypsy,” and the third for Borgnine, who obtained a final divorce decree from Mexican actress Katy Jurado. Borgnine was separated frequently from Miss Jurado before their divorce in 1963.
