Bobby Fischer, 18, a No-Show for Morning Match with Reshevsky

Aug. 14, 1961 - Bobby Fischer of Brooklyn, the 18-year-old U.S. chess champion, thinks he has been rooked. He refused to show up at 11 a.m. today for the 12th game of a series of 16 against Samuel Reshevsky of Spring Valley, N.Y. Fischer said he wasn't accustomed to playing in the morning. The referee called it a forfeit, but Fischer contended that forfeits weren't allowed in the series. "It's just a little joke they're trying to play on me," Fischer said today. "They've been making the games at screwy hours so I'll be tired." Fischer, who has had previous run-ins with chess officials, said the officials for the games this week were "pro-Reshevsky." As for the referee, Fischer said, "He just thinks I'm a kid or something."
