Jan. 13, 1964 - On sale today is Bob Dylan’s third long-playing album, “The Times They Are a Changin,’” a Columbia Records release. Whereas Dylan’s previous albums, “Bob Dylan” (1962) and “The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan” (1963), consisted of both original material and cover songs, the new album is his first to feature only original compositions. On the album, Dylan, accompanying himself on guitar and harmonica, sings mostly stark ballads concerning issues such as poverty (“Ballad of Hollis Brown,” “North Country Blues”), racial discrimination (“Only a Pawn in Their Game,” “The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll”), and social change (the title song). He began recording the album on August 6, 1963, and the final session was held on October 31. The entire session focused on one song — "Restless Farewell"— whose melody is taken from an Irish-Scots folk song, “The Parting Glass,” and it produced a master take that ultimately closed the album.
