Black Hawks Top Red Wings in Chicago

Feb. 24, 1965 - The Chicago Black Hawks racked up their sixth straight win without a home loss to the Red Wings tonight, 3-2, to hold their three-point margin over Montreal in the NHL race. (Pictured below, Gordie Howe of the Red Wings goes for the loose puck as Doug Jarrett defends.)

League-leading scorer Stan Mikita got the winning goal for the Hawks, his 24th of the season, for 73 points, giving the Hawks a 3-0 lead before Detroit rallied with goals by Floyd Smith and Alex Delvecchio in the final 16 minutes.

The win extended the Hawks’ home streak against Detroit to 13 games without a loss. Detroit last won on Chicago ice March 19, 1963.

Bill Hay and Kenny Wharram got the first goals for Chicago. Hay’s 15-footer hit Al Langlois’ skate and bounced over goalie Roger Crozier, while Wharram took a pass from Pierre Pilote just outside the crease, and Crozier had no chance to save.

Ted Lindsay drew a minor and a misconduct penalty with 11 seconds to play in the first period and then was tagged with a game misconduct call by referee Frank Udvari when he blasted the official on the ice after the period ended.

The Hawks played without star wing Bobby Hull for the third straight game due to injured knees. Hull, second in the league scoring race, has missed seven of the last nine games.
